Fargo, con 5 postulaciones, y True Detective, acreedora de 4, fueron las dos producciones que salieron mejor paradas en la noche en que se desvelan las nominaciones de los Golden Globe Awards en el rubro televisión. Con 3 candidaturas se colocaron The Affair, The Good Wife, House of Cards, The Normal Heart, Olive Kitteridge y Orange Is the New Black. También fueron nominadas Game of Thrones, Downtown Abbey, Ray Donovan, The Blacklist, Homeland, Silicon Valley, Veep, Derek, Shameless y Mom.

En lo que respecta a cine, la cinta Birdman, del realizador mexicano Alejandro González Iñárritu, se alzó con 7 postulaciones. Las escoltas fueron Boyhood, de Richard Linklater, y The Imitation Game, del noruego Morten Tyldum, con 5 cada una. Otras nominadas de la pantalla grande fueron The Grand Budapest Hotel (4), Gone Girl (4), Selma (4), Theory of Everything (4), Foxcatcher (3), Big Eyes (3), Into the Woods (3), Annie (2) y St. Vincent (2).
 
En los rubros de talentos, fue sobresaliente el logro de Julianne Moore, quien obtuvo dos nominaciones por Still Alice y Maps to the Stars. Otros candidatos en carrera son Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jennifer Aniston, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Rosamund Pike, Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Murray, Joaquin Phoenix y Christoph Waltz.

En el apartado Mejor Película Extranjera quedaron en la carrera final, Force Majeure Turist (Suecia), Ida (Polonia / Dinamarca), Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem (Israel), Leviathan (Rusia) y Tangerines Mandariinid (Estonia).

La gala, realizada en Los Ángeles, tuvo las participaciones de Kate Beckinsale, Jeremy Piven, Paula Patton y Peter Krause, responsables de revelar las candidaturas, votadas por 80 miembros de la Asociación de la Prensa Extranjera de Hollywood (HFPA). 

Creados hace exactamente 70 años, en 1944, los Golden Globe Awards son los premios entregados por la HFPA a lo que consideran las mejores producciones y talentos de la televisión y el cine. En la industria son reconocidos como un adelanto de los Oscar, pues muchas veces los triunfadores en las principales categorías son los mismos.

En la 72ª edición del evento, Tina Fey y Amy Poehler serán las anfitrionas por tercera vez consecutiva de la entrega final, prevista para el próximo 11 de enero, lo que promete nuevos momentos hilarantes mientras la expectativa crece desde las butacas. Estas actrices, guionistas y productoras surgieron del mítico programa Saturday Night Live, y posteriormente trabajaron juntas en las películas Mean Girls y Baby Mama. Fey descolló en la serie 30 Rock, en tanto que Poehler continúa al frente de Parks & Recreation.
 
Las galas se transmiten por televisión a más de 160 países, con un formato diferente a las de los otros premios, pues se celebran durante una cena a la que asisten los nominados y los periodistas, además de algunos invitados especiales. Para América Latina, TNT emite anualmente de forma exclusiva el evento, que en esta ocasión tiene como escenario el Beverly Hilton Hotel de Los Ángeles. En pleno primetime, la transmisión latinoamericana de TNT contará con los comentarios de Rafa Sarmiento e Ileana Rodríguez Govela, quienes ofrecerán además un Pre-Show desde la alfombra roja. 

La emisión de 2014 cosechó una audiencia de 20.9 millones de espectadores (la mayor de la última década), y la de 2013, 19.7 millones. Según Nielsen SocialGuide, en 2014 se enviaron 2.36 millones de tweets, que llegaron a 10.4 millones de usuarios de la red social Twitter.
